Five Short Pieces (2019) was commissioned by trombonist Don Lucas. It is a collection of brief, contrasting pieces, each complete in itself but intended as a sequence of musical events exploring a broad range of material. The uncommon trio of trumpet, trombone and piano offers many possibilities, and the music in this collection ranges from full-bodied lyricism and dynamic brilliance to tender, singing passages, making use of the broad palette of expression these instruments possess.
